PAUL PEARSON

EDITORS NOTE: Paul’s a bit shy – so here’s what they say about him……………… (they say a lot more but I cant print it here!!)

“Paul ambled up to the mic with a cheery "Ey up!", sat himself down and launched into an explosive version of Springsteen's Youngstown. The savagery of the performance was in total contrast to his amiable stage presence and immediately gripped the audience. In many ways, Springsteen is an anomaly in Paul's set because he specializes in songs by unjustly obscure writers like Tom Pacheco, Ron Truman Border and Paul Jones (The great singer-songwriter from Glasson Dock, as opposed to the Do Wah Diddy man).

“With Paul every song is an emotional journey, for both himself and his listener, and what an excellent travel companion he makes. From rollicking chorus songs to heartbreaking ballads, by the end of his set we're on our feet bellowing for more!  A wonderful evening.”

(Wayne Stote)

“Affectionately known as the Steel Town Troubadour, Paul, from Sheffield, specializes in taking songs from excellent but obscure songwriters and turning them into PP Originals. If the names Ron Trueman-Border, Paul Jones or Tom Pacheco mean anything to you, you'll be aware of the quality of the material. If you've witnessed Paul's natural, controlled aggression and sheer passion, you'll know it's an explosive combination. Not to be missed.”

(The Abbey Inn Charity Music Festival)

“Up our way Paul is known as the Steel Town Troubadour. He has a way with a song that few possess. You can literally feel the warmth generated between him and his Audience. He really is a must see. When you add Chris Treebeard's instrumental wizardry and Michele's sublime voice to the mix, it makes for a real heady brew, indeed.”

(Jane de Gay (The Outsider))

EDITOR ADDS:  He’s a star of the local music scene and his performances are always mesmerising – be prepared to sing.

DEAD CAT BOUNCE      (COUNTY DURHAM)

Dead Cat Bounce came to life following the end of an earlier project known as Tri. Tri played their last concert in the Park Head Hotel in Bishop Auckland on Friday 6 November 2009. Band members Phil Graham and David Pratt decided to keep going as the duo 'Out On A Limb' and later invited Ken Robinson to join them in creating a new project. A little later, Steve Eliffe answered an advert and joined as fiddle and mandolin player.

The name, Dead Cat Bounce, came from David after a few suggestions were tossed around during a rehearsal. And, no! It's got nowt to with cats. Google it and see.

The band will begin recording early in 2010. Until then the music player remains empty.

MARK HEARNE        RAWMARSH

Born to music-loving Irish parents who were big fans of the Clancies, Mark started singing and playing the guitar at an early age and the Celtic influences are always apparent in his act. First appearences on the folk scene were at the Rock folk club (then in Wentworth) as a regular support act before he went on to win the 'best new act' competition first at the Wath festival and then the following year at Stainsby. Recent gigs have been at a variety of venues: pubs, clubs, weddings, funerals, etc..... when a mixture of folk, pop, light-jazz and even a touch of rock has been the order of the day. A guitar solo or two is always a feature of Mark's act.

Occasionally he can be found playing a full evening of Irish music under the name of (don't ask it's a long story!) Mark O'Flynn.

His other claim to fame is to be one of the motivating forces behind Dickie Masher picking up his guitar again, and teaching him a few new chords like Bm - so you know who to throw those crusts and tomatoes at!!

TINA McKEVITT & MATT HEGARTY  (SHEFFIELD)

Since forming their duo in late 2007 Tina and Matt have recorded their CD “The Dewdrop on the Barley” and built up a live acoustic set. They perform folk music with a contemporary twist, specializing in original compositions and interetations of less well known traditional songs. Both experienced performers, they draw heavily on their Irish musical backgrounds which they integrate with other musical styles and influences to produce interesting and sensitive arrangements.

Having grown up in a strong family singing tradition, Tina particularly enjoys the immediacy and intimacy of a cappella singing. Her main role in the duo is that of vocalist but she also accompanies herself and Matt on the piano accordion, melodica and guitar. Tina’s songwriting tends to reflect her interests in politics and social justice.

Matt has been playing in bands of different musical styles since his teens. As well as playing guitar, bass, bodhran, mandolin and low whistle, Matt is a singer/songwriter and is a programmer and recording engineer. He is mainly influenced by various sorts of roots music including reggae, Irish traditional, rock and dance music.

MATTHEW SHORE    (SHEFFIELD)

SOLO SINGER SONGWRITER

Matthew's first encounter with the guitar in his late teens, saw the birth of his quick foray onto the open mic scene in Sheffield late 2009. In just two months he has already gigged various venues across the city including: The Cremorne, Red Lion, Fat Cat, West Street Live, Soyo and Olive Bar. He has also played in Newquay and Norwich with various other venues booking him to play at future dates

With influences stemming from the likes of the Cure, Billy Bragg, Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan and Jeniferever there has yet to be anyone able to genre-tise his music.

Using just his voice and guitar he traverses a road we are all too familiar with. His lyrical themes are diverse, writing from a perspective of interludes between love, loss, self destructive social norms, places and people, delivering a state of realisation that can be related to by all.

His songs are punctuated with elements of punk and folk, contrasting mellow and upbeat chorus' and breakdowns that are contrasted with mellow low-fi intros and verses.

The atmosphere is ignited by the heartfelt passion instilled in his performance, encapsulating a dynamic array of emotion that is filled with depth and substance. Quite surprising from someone so young.

Needless to say it is apparent his only outlet from this nihilistic contemporary society is channeled through his words and melodies. It is clear that tragedies have flown through his bloodstream and he has found his calling through musical poetry. there is no pretentiousness here.

ACOUSTICA    (COUNTY DURHAM)

Acoustica are husband and wife duo Andy and Catherine Higgins. They live and work in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area, but find time to remain a vibrant and respected fixture on the live acoustic music scene.   Andy and Cath describe their music as ‘new-contemporary folk’, and if music has to be labelled then this is as good as any.

Their ‘rootsy’ songs are not as easily pigeon-holed. The music is primarily acoustic; Andy Higgins plays 6 & 12 string guitars, tiple and ukulele. Cath Higgins plays violin, guitar and accordion. Both lend their distinctive voices to individual interpretations of songs as well as blending fine vocal harmonies. The sound is full, but has a lovely intimacy about it.

Debut CD ‘Welcome to..’ released in 2005 was an excellent 10-song showcase for their song writing and versatile instrumental skills.

Current album, ‘The Oban Sessions’ is a deliberate attempt to present the duo’s live sound more accurately. Featuring their takes on songs by the likes of Steve Earle, Bob Dylan and Show Of Hands as well as four self-penned numbers, the album has a live, spontaneous feel to it, with Andy and Cath adding a different twist to many of the better-known songs.

FOOLS GOLD   (COUNTY DURHAM)

Fool's Gold is Steve and Carol Robson; along with Steve Wilson on double bass.

We play at many of the local Acoustic and Folk evenings that can be found in the North East of the UK.

We play a variety of styles, from self penned original songs in folk and contemporarystyles, to covering well known - and much less well known - songs. For video and sound clips please visit our MySpace site.

We are available to play any acoustic function!

We play 6 and 12 string guitars, tenor guitars –an unusual instrument, Double Bass, ukes, mandolin, violin and flute. Live we try to get as many of these in as possible.

The name Fool's Gold comes from one of our songs, which like many of our own songs is really a story about people in a particular place and time.  In the case of Fool's Gold, the people are the poor, dream struck miners of the Klondike gold rush, and the song deals with the contrast between their hoped for riches and the reality of the harsh existence - some dreams have to be paid for.

SPECIAL APPEARANCE FROM CATHERINE AND ANDY

FOLK ON FIRE      (HALIFAX)

Background

Folk on Fire are a family folk band (brother, sister and step-brother) from Halifax, who have only been playing together for the past 12 months. They mainly play traditional folk music from Ireland, England, Scotland and America, jazzing them up a little with their own arrangements.

Lucie - fiddle, mandolin

Matthew - guitar, banjo

Callum - bodhran, cajon, pandeiro

Lucie, the fiddle player and Matthew, the guitarist, have both been playing for many years and are classically trained. Callum has been playing percussion and drum kit for a couple of years, but only started playing the bodhran 12 months ago.

Lucie first ventured into folk music when she picked up a leaflet about a fiddle folk session at a local pub. This introduced her to a local Arts Project, Ryburn 3 Step, where she met professional/semi-professional folk musicians, singers and dancers. This has lead to her playing fiddle for Appalachian step dancers and becoming a member of the Ryburn Longsword Dance team. In true family spirit, Lucie quickly roped her brothers in to play with her, and Folk on Fire was born!

In the past year, Folk on Fire have played at the National Festival of Music for Youth where their performance was described as ‘very stylish indeed’ and ‘a most enjoyable performance’.  In October 2009, they were the first ever sell-out gig at ’Q’ Folk, Victoria Theatre, Halifax, and have since been invited to support Tom McConville, ‘Radio 2 Folk Musician of the Year 2009’ in Knaresborough next May.

Influences

Folk on Fire are influenced by many different folk artists including Uiscedwr, Sean Keane, Skyhook, Boldwood, Mary Humphreys and Anahata, and the American fiddle player, Rodney Miller. When possible they go to Folk Clubs and play in folk sessions around the Halifax area.
