BROTHER CROW  (COUNTY DURHAM)

Brother Crow are an acoustic duo from Weardale, in the heart of rural North East England, who perform original narrative songs about the people, places and historical events of their local area and beyond.

Andrew Davison, who plays guitar and ten-string bouzouki, is the duo’s lyricist and main songwriter. He combines powerful rhythm and delicate finger-style to dramatic effect and uses his evocative lyrics and strong sense of narrative to paint imaginative pictures for the audience.

Graeme Carroll is an accomplished mandolin player and accompanist. His playing has a complexity which combines affection for traditional tunes/playing with a modern melodic style.

Brother Crow’s live performances have been described as intense, captivating, haunting and passionate. The dark nature of some of their songs being counter-balanced by a strong stage presence, a natural sense of humour and fun and a deep knowledge of their subject matter.

Recently, the duo won the Klondike Folk Arts Competition at Ryedale Folk Weekend for their song "As Children We Would Run" and the Tommy Armstrong Best Song Trophy at Durham Traditional Music Festival for “Once Their Were So Few”.

Their critically acclaimed debut CD "One For Sorrow" was released in June 2007 and their new CD, called "Hollow Hills", was released on 28th August 2008.

QUOTES

“A formidable acoustic duo .Their song-writing demonstrates a canny knack for creating material that is at once timeless, soaking up traditional influences and telling a great story. The strength of their material suggests they have written songs that may well be with us for a long time to come” - Mike Wilson, Folking.Com, August 2007.

"Original music replete with the charm of the duo’s native Weardale. Thumbs Up." - fRoots Magazine, December 2007.

"This CD with it's 11 tracks is an absolute gem." - Weardale Gazette, December 2007.

"An exceptional debut. Brother Crow offer their audience profound, penetrating, intense songs delivered with feeling and passion...a talent many will envy." - FolkWords, February 2008.

THE 2Cs   (ROTHERHAM)

How these two get away with what they do is a mystery to me.  But they claim to be popular and begged to be on to day’s bill.   The promise of a bottle of whiskey, which I’ve still to receive did the trick.

As you have guessed, these two lads are publicity shy, or as they claim, let their music do the talking for them.

What is for sure you will love their fusion of blues, rock and what might be described as contemporary folk.  Their own songs are a real treat, but they will throw in a few covers as well.

They are bound to get you moving.

PENNY COOKE  (LOCAL RAWMARSH GIRL)

EDITOR WRITES:  From what I’ve heard of Penny’s material you are in for treat.  She writes all her own songs and while she claims to be in the Punk tradition, even the hardened folkies are going to love her work.

This is her solo debut, although she has worked with area Punk legends Leatherzoo at one of their Boardwalk shows.

IN HER OWN WORDS:

I’m 16 years old

I love to write songs! its the most amazing thing in the world

I love the feeling when you make a song and its all done!

I want to make a professional career with my music!

I love it makes my world tick

PHILIP HARTLEY  (SHEFFIELD)

I am a Singer/ Songwriter from Sheffield. I first started out on the folk scene in Sheffield way back the 1990s when someone started a session in my local pub, the Castle Inn at Bradway. I was immediately hooked. Soon I was asked to join a band formed by two of the people hosting the night to become the lead vocalist/guitarist.

This band was called “Hair Of The Dog” and I was with them until late in 2006, when having grown tired of singing the same old (mainly Irish and Scottish) songs I decided to leave the band. I took a break from music for a while, feeling that I needed to re-group so to speak and have recently begun performing again with a much different set of songs.

Early in 2008 I decided that what I needed was a set of songs that I could call my own and so I began to write and perform some original songs. This has resulted in the making of my first album of original songs: Words And Music” which I recently released via CD Baby and i-Tunes.

I am currently writing more songs and hope to have another album ready by this time next year. My songs can also be heard at my page on MySpace

THE LANTERNS   (ROTHERHAM)

The Lanterns are a Rotherham based trio, sometimes Quartet.  They are close knit harmony instrumental band.  “Tight” hardly describes their stage performances.  They were regulars at Rudi’s Blue’s Café in the centre of Rotherham, and are much loved on the general Rotherham music circuit.

The Lanterns are made up of Paul, a lead guitarist that will have your head spinning, Bob with classy lead vocals and Johno who plays any instrument that happens to be at hand (or so it seems).   They are often joined by Martin (The Roguues) on bass.

Most of their material is covers but you’ll be surprised at the one or two light self written songs that they will throw into their set.

Being relatively new to the Rotherham music scene they are keen to improve their general profile.

TOM HEZCT     (ROTHERHAM)

This nineteen year old is fast making a reputation as one of Rotherham’s most brilliant guitarists, making regular appearances at Rotherham venues.

One thing is for certain you won’t be able to sleep through this set, as Tom is bound to have you rocking in your seats

Tom writes a lot of his own songs and has a delivery that will have you hypnotised.

ACOUSTICA    (COUNTY DURHAM)

Acoustica are husband and wife duo Andy and Catherine Higgins. They live and work in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area, but find time to remain a vibrant and respected fixture on the live acoustic music scene.   Andy and Cath describe their music as ‘new-contemporary folk’, and if music has to be labelled then this is as good as any.

Their ‘rootsy’ songs are not as easily pigeon-holed. The music is primarily acoustic; Andy Higgins plays 6 & 12 string guitars, tiple and ukulele. Cath Higgins plays violin, guitar and accordion. Both lend their distinctive voices to individual interpretations of songs as well as blending fine vocal harmonies. The sound is full, but has a lovely intimacy about it.

Debut CD ‘Welcome to..’ released in 2005 was an excellent 10-song showcase for their song writing and versatile instrumental skills.

Current album, ‘The Oban Sessions’ is a deliberate attempt to present the duo’s live sound more accurately. Featuring their takes on songs by the likes of Steve Earle, Bob Dylan and Show Of Hands as well as four self-penned numbers, the album has a live, spontaneous feel to it, with Andy and Cath adding a different twist to many of the better-known songs.

SIAN SIMMONS

Hey my name is Sian Simmons and I am 19.

I currently study a national diploma in practice music. I have been singing for about 5 years on and off, but have only been playing guitar for around 3 years (I’m a bit of a novice  - hahaha).

I’m currently writing songs and random lyrics all the time.

There are so many musicians that inspire me that I never know what to write or what path to take.  I love any and all types of music, I love listening to Motown , soul, jazz, acappella and gospel , I also love hardcore dance, drum and bass, metal, funk, psychedelia and dare I even say the occasional emo-sceamo babble mmmmwwwwwaaahahahaha

Truth is I’m just as mad as the rest of you if not more so.

And here’s a little secret - I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON EITHER.

EDITOR ADDS:  Anyone who has listened to Sian’s tracks on Myspace will know just how talented this girl is.

Sian has made appearances at Under The Boardwalk and at several other session nights.  But I believe this is one of her first “show case” appearances -  and the music is going to be great.

PAUL PEARSON         (SHEFFIELD)

EDITORS NOTE: Paul’s a bit shy – so here’s what they say about him……………… (they say a lot more but I cant print it here!!)

“Paul ambled up to the mic with a cheery "Ey up!", sat himself down and launched into an explosive version of Springsteen's Youngstown. The savagery of the performance was in total contrast to his amiable stage presence and immediately gripped the audience. In many ways, Springsteen is an anomaly in Paul's set because he specializes in songs by unjustly obscure writers like Tom Pacheco, Ron Truman Border and Paul Jones (The great singer-songwriter from Glasson Dock, as opposed to the Do Wah Diddy man).

“With Paul every song is an emotional journey, for both himself and his listener, and what an excellent travel companion he makes. From rollicking chorus songs to heartbreaking ballads, by the end of his set we're on our feet bellowing for more!  A wonderful evening.”

(Wayne Stote)

“Affectionately known as the Steel Town Troubadour, Paul, from Sheffield, specializes in taking songs from excellent but obscure songwriters and turning them into PP Originals. If the names Ron Trueman-Border, Paul Jones or Tom Pacheco mean anything to you, you'll be aware of the quality of the material. If you've witnessed Paul's natural, controlled aggression and sheer passion, you'll know it's an explosive combination. Not to be missed.”

(The Abbey Inn Charity Music Festival)

“Up our way Paul is known as the Steel Town Troubadour. He has a way with a song that few possess. You can literally feel the warmth generated between him and his Audience. He really is a must see. When you add Chris Treebeard's instrumental wizardry and Michele's sublime voice to the mix, it makes for a real heady brew, indeed.”

(Jane de Gay (The Outsider))

EDITOR ADDS:  He’s a star of the local music scene and his performances are always mesmerising – be prepared to sing.

THE PEARSON CLAN

(NORTH YORKSHIRE)

Linda and Geoff Pearson are an acoustic folk and contemporary duo based in North Yorkshire.

Teesside born Geoff played guitar both as a solo performer and as a duo with Phil Donegan in the '70s at the Sun, at Stockton and elsewhere in the North East, and later alongside Ron Angel, in 'Northumbrian Folk' releasing two successful audiotapes and performing widely. Geoff currently headlines Ceilidh Show band "Blind Stag". Geoff can also be found at music sessions with mandolin, banjo and friends.

Liverpudlian Linda returned to singing and playing in Yorkshire during the '90s, following a lengthy sabbatical raising children. Linda (former name 'Coffey') also sang in choirs and unaccompanied with the Harrogate based four-part harmony ladies group, the 'Latecomers' (Edna, Anita and Michelle) before turning solo. Primarily a guitar player, Linda started playing mountain dulcimer in 2002.

Geoff and Linda were honoured to join other musicians on tour with the Stockton Morris Men at the Midsummer Festival in Horndal in Sweden in the summer of 2007. We are able to offer a varied repertoire of material, from Elizabethan airs to contemporary songwriters.

In addition to club performances, we have experience as MC's for both singarounds and music sessions.
