Bandersnatch has created a distinctive style within the acoustic/modern folk genre
with a blend of great harmonies and wonderful musical arrangements. The band has
the ability to move seamlessly from traditional to contemporary and self-
rhythmical folk rock and
blues. Whilst often giving a refreshing edge to established favourites, the band
also endeavours to introduce contrasting material from the less frequently explored
corners of this particular musical landscape. The warmth and humour that allows them
to connect with their audience is not compromised by the discipline that they bring
to their performance.
Bandersnatch emerged in early 2000, when six individuals with substantial musical experience decided to create a sound that combines rich vocal harmonies and musicianship. In 2007 the band lineup changed. Steve Rothwell and Clive Leyland left the band and were replaced by Rebecca Raw and Ian Kell. From February 2007 the band is:
Dennis Dodds: mandolin, guitar, banjo, & vocals
Ian Kell: acoustic/electric guitar, piano & vocals
Ed McGurk: guitar, cittern, whistles & vocals
Norman Raw: bass & vocals.
Rebecca Raw: violin/viola & vocals.
Alan Roscoe: guitar & vocals.
Bandersnatch are comfortable playing unplugged in folk clubs or on a large stage. The flexibility resulting from the band’s instrumental versatility allows it to adapt its music to the venue and the audience.
Past and future appearances include:

WHIPSTAFF (JOOLS AND PETE THOMPSON)
Whipstaff is an amateur folk-
Riding
of Yorkshire, we perform our own arrangements of traditional material and original
self-
The name ‘Whipstaff’ comes from our lurcher, Suzy, a mixture of whippet and Staffordshire bull terrier, who often provides ‘dog in the background’ sound effects.
Vocals are a curious combination of Jools’s pure, clear alto and Pete’s gravelly, unruly baritone, backed by unpredictable accompaniment on guitar, mandolin, cittern, and tin whistle. Audiences are encouraged to help out by joining in the choruses.
The term we’ve coined for what we do is ‘Ruffian Music’ -
Many of the themes of the songs that we write are rooted in the history, myth, legends
and events of Pete’s native East Riding and conjure up images of its unique and diverse
landscape of wave-
Whipstaff mainly play in sessions and singarounds but we’ll play at the drop of a hat at folk clubs, festivals, parties, in the open air and in caravan awnings – in fact, anywhere we can attract an audience of at least one (or sometimes less).
Best of all, we haven’t got a CD to promote so you won’t be asked to part with any money!
Lou started performing as a singer/guitarist in 1979, when he was 26, and since then has sung and played in various pubs, Folk Clubs and at Festivals, mainly in South Yorkshire but sometimes further afield.
For 6 years in the 1990’s he was one half of the duo ‘Twofold’ and in 2001 he formed
‘Travelling Folk’, a troupe of 9 performers who for a couple of years offered guest
nights comprising short sets from as many of the 9 who were available.
Lou’s repertoire is varied and includes songs written by Jez Lowe, Ralph McTell, Leonard Cohen, Lennon/McCartney and many others. He particularly likes singing a wide range of songs by Bob Dylan and for 6 years from 2000 hosted an annual Dylan night at the Red House in Sheffield.
Lou also ran the Booit Straps Folk Club at The Commercial, Chapeltown, for 3 years from 1983 and again for 4 ½ years from 1998.He has also run 3 or 4 guitar classes each week for over 25 years now, encouraging many people to perform in class, some of whom have now become regulars at various Folk Clubs in South Yorkshire.
Lou’s main ‘15 minutes of fame’ so far though is appearing on Channel 4’s ‘Countdown’ in 2001, winning twice, and therefore being the owner now of a ‘Countdown’ teapot.
At the moment Lou does not have presence on the great www so for contact please Email Acoustic Rotherham and we will pass the message on.
Well these guys are regularly seen on the local pub circuit where they have become legends in their own life time.
Of course they are far to modest to mention
this, all of them being shy retiring
types.
This afternoon we are promised a version of The Rogues. Some members being so shy and retiring that they can be very difficult to get hold of or pin down.
Here’s what they say about themselves -
“Four piece (usually!) folk, rock, punk, pop -
And That’s it.
Very much newcomers to the acoustic scene, and already causing a bit of a stir!
Define them – Acoustic alt.rock ?? You decide. Eskimo.Kissed are really about strong,
original material delivered with conviction. A sprinkling of quality covers also
serves to broaden their appeal to new audiences. Maybe not an act for the folk purists,
but certainly well received when providing a change of mood and tempo at folk events.
It’s clear they’re enjoying their music and growing with every
performance.
What to expect – Julie’s fresh, clear voice has been known to turn heads and hush
the most boisterous crowd. A surprise package – when required she can rock out too!
On guitar, Richard’s playing is striking, with a rhythmic style full of riffs and
hooks that tug at the ear -

Sam Eden combines powerful vocals and engaging lyrics, with intricate piano melodies
and delicate guitar styles. It is difficult to classify his music because the style
of each song varies a lot. Folk
rock, pop rock, piano ballads and more. This makes
for a captivating gig, often casting a busy pub in to attentive silence.
Sam has a wide range of influences including classical composers such as Einaudi Ludovico and Mike Oldfield, legendary songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, and modern pop rock artists such as The Cranberries and Damien Rice. Combine this with his up and down personality and it’s not surprising he’s turned out to be such a dynamic and original artist.
In 2007 Sam jumped in at the deep end fronting for Cardiff rock band ‘Cellar Door’. This was a brave introduction to the live music scene and formed an important part of his final year at university where he studied geology.
In 2008 Sam spent the winter in the French Alps, snowboarding and working as a chalet host. He often played in local bars and cafes and soon his musicians dream started to become more than just an aspiration. It was here that he found the inspiration to write some of his most poignant songs including ‘Footsteps’ and ‘Shades of grey’.
Sam returned to his home town, Malvern, UK and began booking every gig he could get. In the summer of 2008 he composed ‘Place I Know’, a folk rock song that describes the magic and magnificence of the great Malvern Hills. At the same time came the formation of Malvern rock band ‘Fellfield’. This started as a duo and by the later part of 2009 the band was a five piece including drums, bass, electric guitar and Cello. Despite playing over one hundred gigs across the midlands, the band broke up due to artistic differences.
In 2010 Sam has found his niche performing as a solo artist once again. He is currently recording his album and hopes to complete it before the end of the year.
The album will have a predominant acoustic sound to it, reflecting his live performances. Many tracks have accompanying strings, drums, bass, synth, harmonies and more. You name it, there is something in there for everyone, an album well worth listening to.
Will Padfield is a 28-
Growing up in a musical family, Will found it impossible not to get sucked into playing music and has been battling this addiction quite unsuccessfully for the last 12 years or so.
Proving that once you're bitten by the music bug it's impossible to shake the little
bloodsucker off, even getting a
"proper job" hasn't rehabilitated him, as he's currently
skiving and writing this biography (albeit bizarrely in the third person!?) while
at work.
Wills own songs are passionate singa/stompalong tunes filled with funky little hooks, lyrical twists and scathing social commentary, that reflect being from a generation obsessed with itself, nostalgia, celebrities and sitting around whinging about all of the above while logged onto face book.
Having tackled a variety of genres from show tunes and thrash metal through to country and electronica in the past, Wills influences are understandably vast and varied, and his current solo acoustic material reflects this, drawing on classic artists such as Neil Young, Jonny Cash, The Eagles and Jimi Hendrix, through to hard rock and metal bands such as Soundgarden and Pantera, while shamelessly pilfering the odd bit of jazz, blues and funk along the way, its a mixed bag of musical sweets with everything but the parma violets.
Ultimately, though there are only two types of music, good music and bad music and that all depends on your own opinion, which probably makes this biography a bit pointless, so make up your own minds, and hopefully Will Padfield will fall into the first category.

I am a Singer/ Songwriter from Sheffield. I first started out on the folk scene in Sheffield way back the 1990s when someone started a session in my local pub, the Castle Inn at Bradway. I was immediately hooked. Soon I was asked to join a band formed by two of the people hosting the night to become the lead vocalist/guitarist.
This band was called “Hair Of The Dog” and I was with them until late in 2006, when
having grown tired of singing the same old
(mainly Irish and Scottish) songs I decided
to leave the band. I took a break from music for a while, feeling that I needed to

Early in 2008 I decided that what I needed was a set of songs that I could call my
own and so I began to write and perform some original songs. This has resulted in
the making of my first album of original songs: Words And Music” which I recently

I am currently writing more songs and hope to have another album ready by this time next year. My songs can also be heard at my page on MySpace

Stormcrow are acoustic duo Mark and Amanda Hadlett who play quirky original songs in a ‘Folk ‘n’ Roll’ manner. Although Stormcrow are essentially a duo they are occasionally joined by friends along the way, which has made for a fun and varied road.
Originally formed in 1987, Stormcrow was an all male trio frequenting folk clubs
and festivals. Two of the songs recorded by this incarnation of the band can be
found on the CD ‘Chronicles’, which is a collection of the first three Stormcrow
recording sessions. The other two recordings being ‘Stormcrow’ and ‘Face the Future’
were made in 1996 and 1997 respectively by the second
incarnation of the band.
The flavour of each Stormcrow CD is a reflection of the main audience or interest at the time. The CD’s after ‘Chronicles’ were all collaborations of Mark and Amanda with friends.
Crow Circle (1999) was recorded around the building of a Stone Circle in North Yorkshire and many of the songs have a Pagan theme and reflect upon our nature as people as well as having a bit of fun. Around this time Stormcrow played a variety of Pagan camps and festivals.
Celtic Twilight (2005) was recorded during a period of involvement in building a Celtic settlement. The themes involved include looking into our past and the passage of time as well as having a very Pagan feel. Featured on this CD is the more rock based ‘Monks of Satan’ which is a pastiche on misunderstanding. Some friends of ours visited Whitby Abbey dressed as Monks to perform a traditional mumming play when complaints were passed to the management that they were dancing around the ruins and spouting Satanic verse. Well, a song just had to be written.
Here be Demons (2006) was written for a Live Action Role Play group and many of the songs were written specifically for their game. However it does include a rerecording of the Stormcrow classic ‘Justice’ (a jolly song about hanging)
Behind the Mask (2009) was written after Mark and Amanda became involved in the local music scene. Many of the songs are about their experiences, loved ones, pets and some wry observations of history.
Stormcrow music may be performed using an eclectic array of instruments including six and twelve string guitars, guitar lute, bouzouki, mandolin, Djembe' and other strange percussion. Songs can be silly or serious, fantasy or historical, environmental or spiritual. Eclectic variety can surely sum up the Stormcrow sound.
Stormcrow are currently playing acoustic and folk clubs and festivals. Their home club being Loftus Open Acoustic which is held in the Station Hotel, Loftus, every Thursday night.
