RACHEL BARLEY

Only thing I can say about me is..

I am  part of Papa Legbas which is usually seven of us but just lately been playing with Tres da Sete' for small gigs.

If you said four years ago that I would be standing up and singing in front of people I would laugh.

Am not very good at selling myself.

I play by ear on most songs and still find it hard to open my eyes on stage sometimes. I started off getting up and jamming with Steve Milton on the harmonica on the Sunday session at Cross keys.

Only started singing at jam nights after getting well Liquored.  Loll But I can now get up without Dutch courage.

If you would like to book me - Email Acoustic Rotherham  HERE and they will put you in touch.  Thank you.

DAVID KIDMAN                   YORKSHIRE

David is a revival singer performing within the tradition, a passionate and dedicated performer who extends the frontiers of acappella.

In a typical set, creative juxtaposition will integrate and intersperse traditional repertoire with more modern material: rousing choruses with gentler, thoughtful or reflective pieces and occasional fun songs and parodies.

His eclectic (and sometimes unexpected) choice of songs regularly ventures into what for many unaccompanied singers is unfamiliar territory, with latter-day folk classics by Keith Marsden, Graeme Miles, Stan Rogers and Peter Bellamy complemented by songs from the pens of Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan, Robb Johnson and George Papavgeris.

David has brought this enterprising mix into concert sets at a number of folk festivals and special events – including Acoustic Rotherham showcases – as well as support slots for Chris While & Julie Matthews and The Poozies, and radio appearances (BBC’s North Yorkshire Folk and The Durbervilles’ show, and Drystone FM).

David is also a respected and insightful reviewer of CDs, contributing to a number of music publications (both national and regional) and websites.

He is also well-regarded on the folk circuit as a compère with an informed and genuine enthusiasm for the music and a proven track record embracing more than a dozen festivals and folk clubs over the past ten years; he’s currently a resident MC at the Folk Clubs at York (Black Swan) and Bradford (Topic).

PAUL PEARSON         (SHEFFIELD)

EDITORS NOTE: Paul’s a bit shy – so here’s what they say about him……………… (they say a lot more but I cant print it here!!)

“Paul ambled up to the mic with a cheery "Ey up!", sat himself down and launched into an explosive version of Springsteen's Youngstown. The savagery of the performance was in total contrast to his amiable stage presence and immediately gripped the audience. In many ways, Springsteen is an anomaly in Paul's set because he specializes in songs by unjustly obscure writers like Tom Pacheco, Ron Truman Border and Paul Jones (The great singer-songwriter from Glasson Dock, as opposed to the Do Wah Diddy man).

“With Paul every song is an emotional journey, for both himself and his listener, and what an excellent travel companion he makes. From rollicking chorus songs to heartbreaking ballads, by the end of his set we're on our feet bellowing for more!  A wonderful evening.”

(Wayne Stote)

“Affectionately known as the Steel Town Troubadour, Paul, from Sheffield, specializes in taking songs from excellent but obscure songwriters and turning them into PP Originals. If the names Ron Trueman-Border, Paul Jones or Tom Pacheco mean anything to you, you'll be aware of the quality of the material. If you've witnessed Paul's natural, controlled aggression and sheer passion, you'll know it's an explosive combination. Not to be missed.”

(The Abbey Inn Charity Music Festival)

“Up our way Paul is known as the Steel Town Troubadour. He has a way with a song that few possess. You can literally feel the warmth generated between him and his Audience. He really is a must see. When you add Chris Treebeard's instrumental wizardry and Michele's sublime voice to the mix, it makes for a real heady brew, indeed.”

(Jane de Gay (The Outsider))

EDITOR ADDS:  He’s a star of the local music scene and his performances are always mesmerising – be prepared to sing.

Eskimo.Kissed

Very much newcomers to the acoustic scene, and already causing a bit of a stir!

Define them – Acoustic alt.rock ?? You decide. Eskimo.Kissed are really about strong, original material delivered with conviction. A sprinkling of quality covers also serves to broaden their appeal to new audiences. Maybe not an act for the folk purists, but certainly well received when providing a change of mood and tempo at folk events. It’s clear they’re enjoying their music and growing with every performance.

What to expect – Julie’s fresh, clear voice has been known to turn heads and hush the most boisterous crowd. A surprise package – when required she can rock out too! On guitar, Richard’s playing is striking, with a rhythmic style full of riffs and hooks that tug at the ear - and everyone wants to know about that guitar! Richard occasionally takes a lead vocal, and strong harmonies feature throughout.

What they’re up to - Currently busy recording tracks for their debut EP which is due for release in September. Recent gigs include appearances at the Diversity Festival; and at short notice Eskimo.Kissed played a short, well received set to a packed marquee at the prestigious Southwell Music Festival.

Book Them - Eskimo.Kissed are available for bookings, and are self contained with an excellent PA system (200W - 2K, as venue requires) and lights.

JOE EVANS - GARY SAVED MY LIFE

Writing songs since the age of 14, within the last year that this solo project, Gary Saved My Life, has become a reality for singer/songwriter Joe Evans.

After being in a string of bands he decided to go it alone, and is better for it. He was born and raised in Rotherham, then spent 6 years in Cornwall, a place still close to his heart.

Now back in Rotherham, he writes about his experiences so far. His emotions and feelings are on display in all his songs and lyrics. “Every song I write is about an event or a person, or a time of my life close to me. I feel songs mean more that way.”

With just his voice and an acoustic guitar for accompaniment the songs often have a haunting, simplistic quality, but never bore, as each song reads like a story.

“I don’t know the ‘rules’ of song writing, if it sounds good and fits, that’s all I need” Listening to the songs you can almost feel his pain, or joy to which the song is about,There are sad songs, happy songs, thoughtful songs in his set.

Currently in the process of recording a demo during Summer 2010,GSML can often be seen at Jam and open mic nights in the Rotherham and Sheffield area. Often described as sounding like Neil Young, he has also played Sheffield’s famous Boardwalk, Snafu in Rotherham, Dickens bar, and has toured recently in West Cornwall. He is currently recording a set of songs for a new CD.

J.B. BUTTERFIELD

It all began with a beat up old guitar, a blues harp, a pocketful of dreams, smalltown indifference, and the will for pastures new!

THEN! THE BIG BAD WORLD! like minded people, gigs in America(1975 , 2000 2001) gigs all over Europe and the British Isles (SUCH A GREAT EXPLOSION IN MY LIFE!)

In the year 2000 a promoter called Ian Luck thought up an idea about celebrating 175 years railway history in the North East of England, i.e. George stephenson and the Stockton to Darlington railway (the 1st one in the world apparently)the brainchild of this was to become a CD called 'A FULL HEAD OF STEAM'. every song , a song about trains).

The cd featured artists such as Lindisfarne, Vin Garbutt, Jez Lowe, Martin Stephenson (formerly The Daintess) and myself performing my own song "Trains Breathing Fire" this album was deleted (I think some years ago) but there is still a website with all the details online.

Then a few years ago I signed a deal with 'Spook Records' a Scottish Indie label, I released my 1st album with 'Spook' 2 years ago "The Passionate Pilgrim" available on Itunes, Amazon, and Napster, among others.

FOLK ON FIRE

Folk on Fire are a family folk band from Halifax, who have only been playing together since 2008. They play traditional folk music from Ireland, England, Scotland and America, jazzing them up a little with their own arrangements.  They have also recently ventured into writing their own material

Lucie, the fiddle player and Matthew, the guitarist, have both been playing for many years and are classically trained. Callum has been playing percussion and drum kit for a few years, but only started playing the bodhran when the group formed in 2008.

Lucie first ventured into folk music when she picked up a leaflet about a fiddle folk session at a local pub. This introduced her to a local Arts Project, Ryburn 3 Step, where she met professional/semi-professional folk musicians, singers and dancers. This has lead to her playing fiddle for Appalachian step dancers and becoming a member of the Ryburn Longsword Dance team. In true family spirit, Lucie quickly roped her brothers in to play with her, and Folk on Fire was born!

Recently they supported Tom McConville (BBC Folk Musician of the Year, 2009) who described them as:

‘… a wonderful 3 piece band with fiddle, guitar and percussion and I had the pleasure of doing a concert with them at Henshaws, Knaresborough. The music was superbly played by these very young people. Fast dance tunes expertly played and then very mature and warm versions of slow music.  Lovely to listen to they play with absolute confidence and expertise. They also love people and are great communicators with their audience. A lovely professional package throughout. Magic from the young, always a treat and very good luck to them.’

Richard Kitson – Biog – Reviews - Quotes

Richard Kitson is a Barnsley based folk/blues singer/songwriter and guitarist rapidly gaining popularity in folk clubs and acoustic venues in his native South Yorkshire and beyond. After an apprenticeship in short lived post-punk band Strawberry Jack in 1999 he went on to form various three-piece blues/rock bands before settling on a solo acoustic musical path at the end of 2009.

Since 2004 Kitson (28) began playing solo acoustic gigs at the well respected Boardwalk and Grapes venues in Sheffield gradually honing his guitar and vocal skills over the progressing years. Live reviews from music publications and venues hailed him as a fantastic talent showcasing an inventive finger picking style akin to his acoustic guitar heroes Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, Rory Gallagher and Big Bill Broonzy. Like many impressionable young guitarists Kitson got hooked on Dylan at the age of 15. After seeking out the music of the early blues and folk artists who influenced Dylan, Kitson became entranced by the old delta and country blues of the 20's and 30's, and began to employ a fingerstyle technique in his guitar playing. Most recently Kitson's British folk influences have opened him up to traditional British folk song.

He now blends his blues and folk influences with his own natural approach to music and the release of his debut album Home and Dry is a testament to Kitson's many years honing his craft as a song-writer. Although employing the talents of friends and folk contemporaries Katriona Gilmore (of folk duo Gilmore and Roberts), Marjorie Paterson (of folk duo Fyrish) and folk singer/guitarist Gerry McNeice for the recording of his album, Kitson maintains an intimate solo acoustic approach on stage.

NetRhythms Home and Dry Album Review by David Kidman

Richard's a folk-blues singer-songwriter based in Barnsley, who has been making quite a name for himself on the Sheffield and South Yorkshire acoustic scene, this in spite of a distinct modesty, an innate tendency to reticence and to hide his considerable light under a medium-sized bushel.

Home And Dry is in effect Richard's debut CD, since it reflects what he himself considers the best of his own songs to date (at the risk of confusing you with the background, Richard did issue a very-limited-edition release back in 2007 which majored on his passion for delta blues in both acoustic and electric modes, but this proved little more than a catalyst for reassessing his repertoire and so Home And Dry is to all intents and purposes to be regarded as his true debut).

Richard may have started his musical career in a punk band, later gravitating more significantly towards the blues, but as Home And Dry definitely reveals, his true inspirations are the late-60s troubadours Bert Jansch, Davy Graham and John Martyn, from whom he derives much of his performance style and sensibility in roughly equal measure (although it's probably the Jansch influence that feels the most pronounced). Even though the songs on Home And Dry were written over a period of some years, they embody a striking degree of maturity and consistency, and Richard has clearly given much thought on their method of presentation, both in matters of musical arrangement and album sequencing. Taking the former, Richard has sensibly opted for a simple acoustic setting, with his own guitar the primary instrumental colouring (and a splash of harmonica here and there), but most tellingly augmented by the sympathetic contributions of a small handful of musician friends. Katriona Gilmore provides some wonderfully lyrical violin on several of the more introspective songs (also some mandolin and backing vocals), while Fyrish's Marjorie Paterson brings her sensitive cello playing to the mix (mostly in the disc's early stage); Gerry McNeice turns in some brilliantly supportive (at times almost Danny-Thompson-esque) double bass, and Leon Davies contributes soft percussive brush-strokes to a couple of key tracks.

As regards the running order, the disc's menu has been intelligently sub-divided in a kind of A-B-A format, with the more reflective, inward-looking material of the "A" sections bookending a lighter-toned, bluesier "B" section that functions almost as an emotional interlude. The first three songs gravitate towards a kind of chamber-folk texture for a sequence that takes us from the seagull-swooping sound-portrait of Robin Hood's Bay and the gentle romance of Elope and culminates in the disc's simply expressed yet almost unbearably heartfelt emotional core, Cruel Road, written in response to the death of a close friend. After which comes a kind of antidote with the distinctly Martyn-esque laid-back cool folk-blues-with-a-touch-of-jazz of Lay Down Your Loving Arms and the attractively ruminative Hold The Line, forming a kind of bridge to the "B" section's laconic observational Redundant Blues. There's an appealing little instrumental cut (Gypsy Vanner), otherwise the middle few tracks are all quite bluesy, featuring just Richard and his guitar, and appearing more insubstantial, slighter in character than those either side, although Gamblin' Woman features some fine slide playing and lacks nothing in bluesy passion and Low Tide has a certain raggy charm. Take My Hand's another very Martyn-esque creation, and My Love closes the disc's "B" section with possibly its least satisfying number, the closest it comes to pastiche (but hey, still pretty respectable at that, and redeemed by Richard's superbly nifty guitar playing where easy inventiveness well sidesteps derivative cliché-mongering). The disc's closing trio of songs, though less lavishly scored than the first, brings us back to masterly reflection with the Chapmanesque rambling guitar setting for Tears which introduces a tender and delicate lullaby that resonates with All My Trials, following which we experience the considered meditation of These Streets. Finally, the closer, Home And Dry itself, lives up to the double-entendre of its title by couching what amounts to a quite bleak lonesomeness within an almost jaunty little ukulele-driven riff, and dries up almost prematurely in mid-air: home safe, yes, but at the same time dry in the sense of being bereft of a loved one.

Richard is to be congratulated for producing a keen personal statement that's also warmly accessible; his guitar playing is pretty stunning throughout, though with a very natural approach to both phrasing and attack that refuses to shout its technique but instead is content to quietly impress the listener. If there's any small deficiency to be found in this album, then it's an occasional quality of tonal flatness that comes out in Richard's singing voice, which is perhaps born of a lack of confidence; but that's all I can find to say against this unassumingly satisfying disc.

"His inventive finger-picking and slide guitar work underlines a quality of musicianship others can only hope to aspire to". The Plug, Sheffield.

Quote by Otis Gibbs -  American singer-songwriter "When I grow up I want to play guitar like Richard Kitson".

SABRINA PIGGOTTT     -    LEEDS

A Cobh native now resident in the Yorkshire Dales, Sabrina’s songs are full of a sense of open spaces and possibility; she has taken her rich traditional music background and fused it organically with an eclectic range of influences from Tricky to Kate Rusby, from Bjork to Kristen Hersh. Backed by gifted Leeds djembe player Mark Taylor, and the sympathetic cello of David Hornberger, she has crafted a sound which is uniquely her own.

Since leaving Cobh in the mid 1990’s to attend University in Leeds, she has quietly been crafting her unique style. Best known for her virtuoso Bodhran playing, and through her work as Chair of the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, she has spent the last two years  honing the material for her first album, and has been paying her dues gigging around the north of England, and recently did a mini-tour in and around New York.

Though music fans around Cork will know her as the niece of De Dannan’s Charlie Piggott, she has been determined to stand on her own merits and self-financed her debut so as to preserve her artistic independence. Not content just to develop her own work, she has also provided the musical accompaniment for acclaimed poet Siobhan MacMahon’s award-winning work The Mouth of the Cave, which featured this year at the Wicklow Arts Festival where her solo fringe gig was awarded the AOIFE Best Musical Individual award, given each year to the performer who, in the opinion of the panel, gave the best performance at any of AOIFE’s festivals in 2009.

She recorded her self-financed debut album, Sunny Spells and Scattered Showers, in a garden shed in Wakefield during August 2009 and launched it in her home town of Cobh, County Cork in October 2009 and has been busily promoting it in the UK, Ireland and the USA..
