ABOUT MIKE WILSON

I am a freelance writer with a passionate interest in traditional, folk, country and roots-based music. I work independently, writing album reviews and music-related articles that you will be able to read here, in my blog, and on my website, The Root & Branch Review. I have contributed to to Acoustic Rotherham, Folk And Roots, Folk Radio UK, Folking, Fresh Deer Meat, The Green Man Review, The Living Tradition magazine, and Rambles.

It was just after I had turned thirty that I started to become increasingly restless and felt the need

to do more than just go to work and spend my evenings in front of the television. So I turned to the love of my life for inspiration: the music that has provided a soundtrack to my life, through good times and bad, through change and uncertainty. Music has always been an evolving constant in my life, and has cemented some of my closest and most precious friendships.

I started out by tentatively posting a few reviews in a MySpace blog, and quickly attracted the support and encouragement of friends, and the interest of some musicians. This gathered momentum at quite a pace and I soon found myself writing reviews and articles for a number of websites and publications. My motivation to do this was really to give something back to the music community that has given so much to me, and it is this overwhelming desire that continues to drive my energies.

As somebody who had never really given any effort to writing before, there was also an unexpected and most welcome consequence. Writing about something that I was so passionate about has given me a confidence with words and prose that I have never before felt, and has unearthed in me a strong creative desire and an insatiable appetite for literature and poetry. I have probably read more books in the last few years than in the rest of my life, and I find my head constantly buzzing with ideas, and an urge to make sense of the world around me through creative thought and writing. Time is my major constraint these days, though I'm a firm believer in maintaining a full and busy life.
